INCUMBENT Zanu PF Mashonaland West provincial chairman, Mary Mliswa-Chikoka continues to defy the odds following her appointment to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) board.
Mliswa-Chikoka, who is also chairperson of wild-rich Hurungwe Rural District Council (HRDC), was named in the new five-member board tasked with sustainable management of the country’s biodiversity.
Environment, Climate, and Wildlife Minister, Sithembiso Nyoni announced the fresh ZimParks board chaired by Agrippa Sora. Other members include General Sibangumuzi Khumalo, Lesley Ncube, Cecilia Ndubiwa and Mliswa-Chikoka.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com, Mliswa-Chikoka said she was honoured to have been appointed to the biodiversity entity’s apex advisory unit.
“I am honored to be appointed as a board member of the ZimParks and wildlife board, an organisation central to the preservation and sustainable management of Zimbabwe’s natural heritage.
“This appointment comes at a time when the role of conservation is more crucial than ever, and I am committed to contributing to the continued success and growth of ZimParks.
“As part of this dynamic team, I look forward to working with my fellow board members to support wildlife protection, enhance community involvement, and ensure sustainable tourism practices that will benefit future generations leaving noone and no place behind,” said Mliswa-Chikoka.
She underscored that her elevation was by merit.
“I bring a wealth of experience in leadership, policy-making and community engagement, which aligns with the goals of the ZimParks and wildlife board.
“My background in provincial governance and land management will allow me to add valuable insights into the balance between conservation and human development.
“Through strategic planning, effective communication and collaboration, I aim to ensure that ZimParks remains a leader in wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship, contributing to Zimbabwe’s environmental and economic goals which feed into Vision 2030 as espoused by His Excellency President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa,” the former provincial minister said.
The new ZimParks board appointments come in the wake of the ministry’s move to establish a Human-Wildlife Conflict Relief Fund to provide assistance to victims or those affected by wildlife. The fund aims to support bereaved families due to wildlife encounters and provide help to the injured.
